Please remember to leave a 2cm gap between soil level and the entrances to allow slugs into the trap but not ground beetles which are a natural slug predator.

I'm in zone 8a and this year I've concentrated on my perrinals. I'm excited to watch them grow back year after year. Unfortunately we rent so EVERYTHING is in containers but it hasn't stopped me from planting them this year. Not with how much inflation has gone up. You have a beautiful garden 💜 enjoy the bounty of your hard work Sir. 💜 Happy growing 💜

I spent over $500 on different kinds of organic amendments and over the past 3 years I've been meticulously evaluating them. I've narrowed it down to 4 amendments and 3 calcium sources. Everything else is unnecessary and may contain high amounts of heavy metals. The majority comes from my vermicomposting and recycling nutrients as well as my soil.

Tried this. I managed to film an army of them around the trap. From what I could tell some manage to contact the solution and escape whilst others do drop in. I didn’t stay around long enough to see what happened to those that escaped but there was no sign of them come this morning.

That is for this tip , I had a months worth of shells and I tried crush them by hand, I never thought of using a vita mix machine, it ground the shells nicely. Half my tomatoes get ruined from blossom end rot because I was growing them in 5 gallon bucket’s which the soil dries out quickly , this is the first year I’m using grow bags that I got in 25 gallon size, shouldn’t dry out as fast

Small exception to the rule. If pine needles keep accumulating, they create a separate layer of soil above the mineral soil...this, combined with the rain, creates some acidic humus due to the humic acids and tanins. But this happens only on certain occasions (abscense of mixing of layers) Where i live, soil is chalky and dry (pine needles accumulate and most of the times, the rain can't leach tanins and various acids from this layer) but underneath pine trees, this humus layer i described is way more acidic (ph 5.5) than the calcareous soil underneath.

It’s in reality difficult to change the ph of the soil. The biggest factor increasing soil ph by far is using municipal tap water which typically comes out at a ph of 8.0-9.5 due to the addition of chloramine. Most municipalities no longer use chlorine to kill microorganisms. If you are using municipal water and believe ph is the reason for poor plant health acidifying the water with vinegar is your best options This makes automatic watering challenging unless you install a dosatron. Using a dosatron makes sense for commercial operations. For home use storing water in a cistern and adding a small amount of dilute vinegar can work. To get the amounts correct requires ph testing. Typically one tablespoon of 7% vinegar will bring 10 gallons of city water to a ph of around 6.0 though this can vary greatly depending on what the water ph in in your area. Where I live in San Francisco the municipal water is an atrocious ph of 9.4. Well water is usually close to neutral but can be either acidic or alkaline thigh it’s never anything close to chlorinated water. Well water can be problematic due to high dilute levels especially calcium which can accumulate in the soil especially in potted plants. Generally soil that is healthy is slightly acidic due to the fermentation of microorganisms. A high ph can make plant nutrients convert to a non available form. A high ph can also reduce microorganisms growth which are needed to make nutrients available. In reality on less you have a soil ph problem it’s better to not try to change it. In an ideal biome the ph will self correct. There are cases when the biome is not healthy and intervention may then be needed. It not as simple as just assuming that plants that prefer acidic soil will do better if you acidify. If your blueberries are growing well then it speaks for itself. If they are not then ph may be an issue but it’s far more likely to be related to watering or fertilization practices or the growing conditions. Best, Mats H
